Subnormal is a punk rock magazine. We are not going to hate a band if they are signed to a major label, nor will we give them any extra favor. We are not impressed by fame or money. We could care less. We often do not read biographies or press releases as we don’t want to regurgitate the same crap every other lame magazine writes. If we use them, it’s to get a few details if we are really blown away by what we hear.
We are not here to stroke anyone’s ego. If you cannot handle possibly getting a crappy review, then don’t ask us to review it. We typically do not trash / delete our work of writing a review after we have gone to the trouble of reviewing it.
Soon we will review material ONLY of which we have been sent hard copy materials of (vinyl or CD). We will notify of that here after we have had time to promote this site more massively.
For now, all you have to do is push a few buttons to get some free press. Again, if you can’t handle the risk of a bad review, then maybe contact that fluff Hollywood Sentinel sham site instead. If we hate something, we may not be nice about it. If we hate a bands politics we may not be nice about it. So what? Deal with it. Everybody has their own opinion. –Peace.
Southern California indie-rock trio Wallows release a brand new track, “Uncomfortable.” Written and produced by Wallows, “Uncomfortable” is the follow-up to their previously released tracks “Pleaser” and “Sun Tan.” With its subdued tempo and dreamy, vulnerable vocals, “Uncomfortable” reveals yet another side of Wallows. Pleaser has racked up over 3.5 million views.
Despite forming less than a year ago, Wallows members Braeden Lemasters, Dylan Minnette and Cole Preston have been playing music together for nearly a decade. The connection is evident in their solid, high-energy live performances. Wallows have just wrapped up a series of sold-out shows at LA’s The Roxy and Troubadour, Slim’s in San Francisco, Constellation Room in Santa Ana and Mercury Lounge in New York City. Wallows are currently writing and prepping new tracks with plans to release more new music this year. The band recently performed at the Levi’s Haus in Los Angeles for the premiere episode of Levi’s Sunset Sessions, which will be released in the coming weeks.

Brian Jonestown Massacre
These guys have been around for ages (30 years now–wow), and it shows with their phenomenal musicianship and musical craftsmanship of tracks that are pure gold. This is the type of band that I can’t just listen to when I’m working or multi-tasking. Because all of their songs are so powerful and intense, I just need to sit down and “experience” every second of their sound and let it wash over my spirit and body. My favorite bands such as Sonic Youth and Warpaint are like that, and this one’s no different in that regard.
With styles reminiscent of the best 60’s psychedelic rock like StrawberryAlarm Clock, mixed with darker elements like Hawkwind, Helios Creed, and early Butthole Surfers, Brian Jonestown Massacre will blow your mind, and that is no overstatement whatsoever.
“The Real” (below) is their new lead single that opens the prolific psych rock icons #19 long-player, Fire Doesn’t Grow on Trees, out on June 24.
Singer Anton Newcombe’s states, “I’m singing to empower other people, I’m trying to give comfort and support to the listener in a very matter of fact kind of way. It’s a call to arms, the beast can be this overwhelming darkness, the dragon, it’s absolute madness… we are in for a tough ride, have no illusions.”
In further Anton Newcombe productions, on May 18, Anton’s rework of Scottish singer-songwriter Dot Allison’s song “Cue The Tears” will be released as the third single from Dot’s forthcoming Entangled Remix EP, out on May 27 on SA Recordings. Dot Allison earlier fronted the awesome neo-trance shoe gaze pop outfit One Dove. The “Cue The Tears” EP is a collection of reworkings of tracks from Dot’s critically acclaimed 2021 album Heart-Shaped Scars, and alongside Anton features legend Lee “Scratch” Perry (the final production of his career), Saint Etienne and more.
